Candidates for the upcoming local government election have been urged to “be bold” in tackling Scotland’s housing crisis.
National charity Shelter Scotland has published its Local Manifesto for Homes in a bid to tackle the widening inequality in the housing sector.
The manifesto includes four demands aimed at boosting the supply of affordable homes, strengthening the safety net for those at risk of losing their homes, improving the rental market and ensuring housing is part of a fairer Scotland.
To back their bid to encourage council election candidates to focus on the issue, Shelter Scotland bosses have organised a series of hustings across the Scotland in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Aberdeen.
Shelter director, Graeme Brown, said: “At the heart of our manifesto and our campaign is the need for a home for everyone in Scotland.
“We are challenging all local election candidates, from all parties, to sign-up to both our manifesto for homes and our campaign call for a new national homelessness strategy to better tackle and prevent homelessness in Scotland.”
The council house waiting list in Aberdeenshire is around 13,000 people long currently and the local authority has struggled to keep up with affordable housing targets.
The Aberdeen housing hustings will be held on Tuesday, April 18 from 6pm at Aberdeen Citadel in Castle Street.
