Free wi-fi has been rolled out across Aberdeen city centre in what the council leader has pledged will “future proof” the city.
Aberdeen City Connect is already available in 17 libraries, nine community and learning centres, Aberdeen Maritime Museum, Seventeen, Adventure Aberdeen and Marischal College.
Now city residents walking on Union Street, Union Terrace, Broad Street, Belmont Street, Market Street, Back Wynd and Schoolhill will be able to log into the network.
Streets including Huntly Street and Justice Mill Lane are to be connected in the next phase of the plan.
Council leader Jenny Laing said the digital roll-out was indicative of the administration’s ambition for the city and citizens would reap “huge benefits”.
She added: “This is about allowing people in Aberdeen to roam freely in the city and do business from their laptops and mobile devices.
We recognise that people have to be connected at all times which is why we have made the introduction of free high-speed, wi-fi a priority.
“This brings us into line with some of the world’s most progressive cities and is just another step in fulfilling our ambition to make Aberdeen a 21st century city. This will also future-proof the city for the next 30 years and there will be more to come as we keep pace with changing technology.
“This is a process which will keep Aberdeen at the cutting edge and one of Scotland’s smartest cities.”
Leonora Montgomerie, secretary of the city centre community council, said: “The community council welcomes the introduction of the broadband and bringing Aberdeen into the digital age.
“We look forward to seeing more streets switched on in the future.”
