Aberdeenshire pupils were led into their classrooms in “Pied Piper” fashion yesterday to start the first term in their brand-new school.
It was not Hamelin but Hillside – where the Newtonhill Pipe Band led a march around the newly completed educational establishment to ensure all the pupils made it to the main entrance in time for the bell.
The school had been due to open three weeks ago but “safety and security” checks caused the date to be pushed back.
Head teacher Lesley-Anne Munro said: “Today we welcomed pupils to our lovely school here at Hillside. It has been an exciting and busy day and we are looking forward to a future full of joy and learning in our brand new building.
“The school will celebrate its official opening later this year.”
The £12.9million facility has capacity for up to 365 youngsters and includes 13 classrooms, two GP rooms, a library and a gymnasium – which includes space for two courts, with changing facilities and retractable seating.
North Kincardine councillor Alison Evison welcomed the opening and said: “The first day was really exciting for Hillside School pupils, families and staff alike as the new building was opened for lessons. I wish everyone a happy and successful time there. Many thanks go to all the staff who have worked so hard over the last weeks to ease the transition process.”
