Council chiefs are pushing ahead with the installation of a controversial parking payment app – saying it will save Aberdeen residents cash.
Earlier this week, the Press and Journal revealed that the local authority was switching their provider from PaybyPhone to RingGo- which recently suffered a major data breach.
The opposition SNP group said the council should consider delaying the implementation.
But last night a council spokeswoman insisted that the change would benefit drivers’ pockets.
She said: “Customers will now benefit from a reduction in the convenience charge from 20p down to 10p as part of the changeover.
“RingGo offers the most widespread cashless parking solution across the UK, working with approximately 125 local authorities.
“This means that motorists who are registered with RingGo can use this service in other cities and only have to register once.
“The switch comes after the contract with the previous provider came to an end.
“To ensure best value is achieved, a vigorous tendering process was undertaken. A total of four companies submitted responses to the tender and RingGo was awarded the contract.”
Drivers in the city who are registered with PaybyPhone will have received a text message to alert them to the change and advise that they should preregister with RingGo.
Those who are not already registered with RingGo will need to provide their details to the new service.
