The Aberdeen to Lerwick ferry was forced to turn back tonight after a large wave caused damage to the boat.
The MV Hrossey vessel operated by Northlink Ferries was heading for Lerwick from Aberdeen, via Kirkwall, when a large wave shattered its windows at around 7pm.
It is believed that windows at the front of the ship were smashed which resulted in water flooding in.
The Hrossey was then re-routed back to Aberdeen and docked there shortly before 9:30pm.
The weather in the area was described as “extreme” when the incident happened.
Nobody is thought to be injured.
Northlink have offered cabins to all passengers and expect to be able to resume the journey tomorrow morning at 10am having undertaken repairs.
