The coxswain of Fraserburgh lifeboat has encouraged beachgoers to enjoy the summer sunshine responsibly as he warns of the dangers of riptides and hidden currents.
Victor Sutherland has given presentations to several local school groups about water safety ahead of the summer holidays.
Now he is appealing for locals and visitors to stay alert while in and around the water.
“Try to stay with others and not go off by yourself,” the experienced lifesaver said last night. “Always let people know where you area and when you’ll be back.
“For any issues on the water call 999 immediately if possible and try and give them as much information as possible about where the person is, if they’re in the water, what they’re wearing and where they’re drifting.
“The quicker we’re up and going the better. If we go out and then are stood down because it’s a false alarm, that’s great.”
Mr Sutherland, whose volunteer crew pulled two children from the waters of Fraserburgh’s bay when they got into trouble while swimming in 2014, added that it was important to know your own limits.
“They weren’t aware of the tides – there are a lot of sandbanks and riptides at the beach.
“If you’re worried seek advice. Don’t be afraid to come past the station. We don’t want to discourage people from having fun, just to be aware at all times. And never be afraid to ask for help.”
Lifeboats are launched by 999 calls to the coastguard.
