Two-years-ago he felt the dejection of political defeat as he lost his seat at the Scottish election.
And while he is now in a different political arena, yesterday marked the jubilant comeback of former Aberdeenshire West MSP, Dennis Robertson.
Mr Robertson was one of four councillors elected to serve Stonehaven and Lower Deeside.
And he could not hide his joy as the results were read out on stage, where he was accompanied by guide dog, Murphy.
Speaking after the results were declared, he said he was looking forward to the new challenge.
He said: “It’s good to be on the other side of the fence in some respects and be working with the council and of course I’ll be working with my MSP colleagues.
“It’s going to be different for me as I’ll be at home a lot more – I don’t know if it’s as good for everyone else, but it’s good news for me.
“For me the integration of health and social care is important and obviously trying to get the education and attainment gap sorted out, these are probably the two key areas.
“And anything that pertains to Stonehaven and Lower Deeside, whether it’s to do with incidents involving seagulls or infrastructure and roads, but that’s all things we can work together with across parties, because they’re not political issues.”
And Mr Robertson said the changing political landscape in the region is not something that could be ignored.
“The Tories have had a tremendous result, you can’t hide away from that,” he added.
“But I’m glad our vote held up and I think we could potentially go into administration with other parties, but there’s a lot of work to be done before that could happen.”
