A Fraserburgh man has been named among those injured in a Spanish horror crash.
Scott Gordon was cycling with the Atletic Llebeig Club near Oliva when a driver, thought to be high on drink and drugs, ploughed into them on Sunday.
Two have died as a result of the incident while three more, including oil worker Mr Gordon, have been left injured.
The dad-of-two has been taken to a hospital in the Denia region to recover.
His injuries are unknown.
The female driver of the vehicle has meanwhile been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and wounding.
She is thought to have failed a drink and drugs test at the crash scene – about 60 miles north of popular holiday destination Alicante.
Yesterday, Julio Almazan, a former member of the triathlon club, confirmed Mr Gordon was caught up in the incident.
He said they were still in a state of shock and that he understood the female driver had hit the members of his club head-on after crossing over into their carriageway.
He said he believed she tested positive for cocaine and failed a drink-driving test.
Mr Almazan said the incident happened at around 8.30am and said he thought it was possible she could have fallen asleep at the wheel as she was heading home after a night out partying.
Jaime Escortell, the club’s current president, was with the members when the crash happened.
He said: “We almost didn’t have time to react.”
Officials in Javea have said they will hold three days of mourning for the dead.
Mayor Jose Chulvi said: “We’re talking about people who were very well-known in the area.
“We’re all devastated. Now is a time to be with their families and support them.”
A spokesman for the Civil Guard added: “Two of the cyclists in the group of six have died, one is in a critical condition, two are serious and one suffered only light injuries.”
Following the tragedy, friends of Mr Gordon have changed their profile pictures on Facebook to images of black ribbons.
