A scheme to attract people back to a north-east town will be unveiled to the public for the first time tomorrow.

Rediscover Peterhead BID will run an event from 5.30pm to showcase the findings of the group’s recent business questionnaire.

The organisation is determined to highlight the main issues it needs to focus on to make the town a more pleasant place to work and live.

And last night, John Pascoe, vice-chairman of the group, described the occasion as another “piece of the puzzle” to help get the port back on its feet.

He said: “The Peterhead BID will work in partnership to continually improve the experience of the town centre.

“We all remember how successful the town once was – Rediscover Peterhead will aim to ensure that the centre of the Blue Toon fulfils its potential once more.

“We will work diligently to make this a pleasant place to work, to attract trade and tourism, and ensure it is a vibrant, safe, clean and lively place for everyone to enjoy.”

At tomorrow’s event, guest speakers from Elgin – where a similar scheme has been run – will provide insight into how the community can benefit from the project.

Mr Pascoe added: “The primary purpose of the event will be to unveil our Next Steps document, which we’ve drawn up after analysing the responses from the questionnaires filled in by local businesses.”

BID coordinator Iain Sutherland said: “We are very keen to see a strong turnout of Peterhead town centre businesses to see the findings and discuss the proposed projects.”

The Peterhead initiative will run over the next five years.

More than 30 similar ventures have been operating across Scotland in recent years, finding effective ways in which additional funding for improvement schemes can be raised.

Participating businesses subsequently decide how to use the funds to get the best value for their communities.

Tomorrow’s meeting will take place at the Palace Hotel.
