Engaged residents of the north-east’s largest town are being urged to restart its community council, nine months after a lack of interest caused it to collapse.
The Peterhead community group was dissolved in the autumn but now Aberdeenshire Council has issued a fresh appeal for volunteers in the area to step forward.
If 12 residents of the town formally request the re-establishment of the group by May 30, a formal call for nominations will be triggered. Should more than 20 volunteers submit their names then an election will be held.
The town is shared between two local authority wards and as a result there will be 10 community councillors representing the north of Peterhead and another 10 for the south.
A spokesman for the Third Sector Support Group – part of the Buchan Community Planning Group which is overseeing the scheme – said: “There is quite a bit of work involved in being a good community councillor. It is important that your community know that you are a community councillor and how to contact you”.
Community councils are voluntary bodies but have statutory rights to be consulted on planning applications in their areas.
In the Buchan area, community councils have played a part in getting the Macbi community centre in Mintlaw started as well as projects at Aden Country Park and Fraserburgh swimming pool.
Other projects led by the groups include local galas and Christmas lights displays.
