A student is critically ill in hospital after falling 30ft from a balcony in Ibiza.
Kanza Rehman suffered serious head injuries in the accident, which happened early yesterday in the San Antonio area of the island.
The 21-year-old’s frantic family has now flown out to be at her bedside.
It is not clear if Miss Rehman – who is in her third year of an international tourism management course at the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen – was on holiday or on the island for work experience.
It is believed Miss Rehman, of Newtonhill, was in a second floor apartment with a male friend after a night out before she fell.
He was yesterday being quizzed by police about the circumstances of the incident, although initial reports suggest it was an accident.
The student was originally treated at Can Misses Hospital in the town and admitted to intensive care unit with serious head injuries.
However, due to the “gravity” of her injuries, she was later airlifted 100 miles to Son Espases Hospital in Palma.
Friends have since been posting messages of love and support online.
One pal, Lucy Ritchie said she was praying for Miss Rehman, adding: “It was her first night out there too – she was so excited.”
Another, Katie Miller, wrote: “Kanza, I am praying so hard for you. You’ve been through so much and I know you can get through this. Please everyone keep her in your thoughts.”
And in a statement, RGU’s principal, Professor Ferdinand von Prondzynski, last night said: “We are aware one of our students has been involved in an accident while on holiday in Ibiza.
“Our thoughts are with the student and her family and friends at this troubling time and we hope for a full and speedy recovery.”
A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are in contact with local authorities following the hospitalisation of a British woman in Ibiza and are ready to provide consular support.”
A source at the resort said the man she was with – who is believed to be renting the apartment while working on the island as a DJ – saw her fall as he came out the bathroom but could not get to her in time.
They added: “He will be formally questioned by police but there is nothing at this stage to indicate the victim was pushed and it appears to be an accident in which alcohol may have played a factor.”
