Volunteers appeal for votes to ensure lights stay on in Peterhead this Christmas

A community group from the north-east’s biggest town is appealing to local people to vote in favour of Christmas – as they bid to claim £10,000 to pay for a festive light display.

Light Up Peterhead is the organisation which arranges the annual display in the town centre.

But every year the volunteers have to battle to secure the funding necessary to ensure Peterhead celebrates Christmas in style.

Now Light Up Peterhead has applied for a chunk of the Your Voice Your Choice grant funding which has been offered to projects in the town.

Initiatives which could improve the health and wellbeing of local people have been invited to put forward proposals which will then be voted on by the community.

Light Up Peterhead’s Phyllis Mundie said: “It would be great if we could get support from the community to help light up our town.

“We have managed to raise funds in the past couple of years, but we’re a very small group and it’s an incredibly large project.

“A £10,000 funding boost from Your Voice Your Choice could be just what the town needs for Christmas.”

Your Voice Your Choice is a participatory budget scheme which encourages local people to take part in projects to help their area. Up to £100,000 is available in Peterhead and Fraserburgh, with smaller amounts on offer in Turriff.

In Peterhead groups can bid for up to £10,000 towards their scheme, although smaller amounts are on offer.

Applications for cash have come in from 28 large projects and 15 small projects, including plans for a town centre youth cafe, funding towards the Peterhead Men’s Shed and a series of track and field athletics events.

Voting has open online and will close on June 23. The following day a “Big Vote Community Event” will be held in the town centre at which local people can make a final decision on which projects are granted money.
