A newly-elected MP has opposed plans to create a new home for Aberdeen FC at Kingsford.
MP for West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine, Andrew Bowie, has revealed he will not support the proposal for the stadium, which falls right at the edge of his constituency.
The plans are going to be reviewed by councillors later this year.
The Conservative MP will not have a say in the decision – it will be taken by city councillors. However, Mr Bowie stressed he has raised “legitimate concerns” in regards to the plans to build the new 20,000 seater venue.
Mr Bowie, who was elected earlier this month, said: “As a lifelong supporter of Aberdeen, I totally understand and support the club’s ambition to take it into the 21st century with new and better training facilities.
“Having said that, I cannot support a development on this site.”
“This is not a decision I have arrived at lightly, but I must put the interests of my constituency first.”
Aberdeen’s executive vice-chairman, George Yule, responded that the club’s future would be “bleak” if the plans for the new stadium were not approved.
He invited councillorsand MPs with any queries or concerns to come forward and stated: “We’re currently organising a series of briefings for new MPs and councillors, so that they can hear the facts about the proposals and ask us any questions.”
He added: “We will continue to work with the planners to fully address genuine and perceived areas of concern.”
