An ambitious new science fiction venture will boldly go where no futuristic props have gone before – to Peterhead’s Arbuthnot Museum.
The Invasion exhibition opens in the Blue Toon next week and is one of the UK’s largest collection of props and costumes from sci-fi productions including Alien, Star Trek, Planet of the Apes and Red Dwarf.
Visitors to the free exhibition will be treated to a look inside the famous sleep chamber from Ridley Scott’s seminal space horror Alien, as well as Matt Le Blanc’s spacesuit from Lost in Space.
Alongside the displays, museum staff have organised creative activities for youngsters including mask-making and design-an-alien workshops as well as a topic locals are more than familiar with – monsters from the sea.
Arbuthnot Museum is overseen by Aberdeenshire Council and Gillian Owen, chairman of the region’s education committee, said: “The Invasion exhibition promises to be out of this world and is a once-in-a-galaxy chance to see, first-hand, a spectacular collection of props and costumes from some of our favourite films and TV shows.”
She added it was a “real scoop” to bring such a prominent collection to Aberdeenshire.
Councillor Mark Findlater, vice-chairman of the committee, added the sci-fi theme will be “taking over in Aberdeenshire” and in particular Peterhead during the exhibition.
A series of workshops will be held with local school pupils about routes into film and theatre and Peterhead Community Cinema will be screening back-to-back science fiction films during the run.
The exhibition will open on Saturday, July 1 and run until August 1.
