Children from a north-east primary school teamed up with a local charity to create a safety video they hope can save the lives of their peers.
All the pupils from Turriff’s Fintry Primary School were invited to Absafe’s Bridge of Don centre for a day of workshops to keep them safe in the home and on the road.
The centre gives visitors the chance to take part in interactive displays about dangers in the kitchen, on rail lines and also on the internet.
During their visit the pupils teamed up with the Absafe staff and production company Fennel Media – who were directing a broader safety campaign – to promote the centre.
Head teacher Jane Mack said: “It was the whole school from primary one to primary seven. It wasn’t just road safety, it included the kitchen and the internet.
“The children took part in loads of activities and they loved it. According to the parents they remembered loads. We’re going to make a regular thing on it.”
She added: “I’d really recommend Absafe to children.”
The video, which is available to view on Youtube, will now be shared with kids across Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray and encourages other schools to visit the centre.
Absafe’s Laura McIntyre said: “The video depicts a typical school day here at Absafe with both children and volunteers alike enjoying the experience. Fennel Media really captured the element of fun that we pride ourselves on here which, ultimately, helps make sure these important life lessons stay in people’s minds long after the training has finished.”
And Absafe’s education manager Malcolm McMillan added: “We’re about promoting safety education to everyone throughout the community. We do it in a fun and engaging way so our important message sticks.
Since it opened in 2012, Absafe has educated thousands of children and enrolled hundreds of volunteers on the fundamentals of safety awareness.
