The Scottish Government has agreed to improve warning signs on a busy north-east road, which has seen four people killed and 13 seriously injured since 2014.
The Mintlaw to Fraserburgh route includes the A952 Mintlaw to Cortes road – overseen by the local council – and a section of the A90 between Cortes and Fraserburgh.
New figures have highlighted a dramatic number of serious and fatal collisions on the carriageway during the last three years and, following public pressure, officials at Holyrood have announced plans to improve signage.
In a response to a parliamentary question from north-east Conservative MSP Liam Kerr, transport minister Humza Yousaf said the work was due to be completed by this autumn.
Mr Yousaf explained: “The A952 is a local road and Aberdeenshire Council is responsible for the maintenance and safety of this route.
“As trunk road authority, we have undertaken a study of the A90 between the Cortes junction and Fraserburgh and have a further investigation ongoing.
“We will be upgrading bend warning provision at identified bends along the route to assist drivers and reduce accidents.”
Mr Kerr, the Scottish Conservative transport spokesman, welcomed the investment.
He said: “I am pleased to see the Scottish Government is taking some action to address the concerns about the high rate of fatal and serious accidents on this section of road.
“It is a small victory that should help to improve road safety, but it is clear that much more needs to be done.”
Mr Kerr added he and local councillors will be “keeping the pressure on the government” to continue to investment in the busy route which is used by commuters and haulage firms.
He said: “We will await the outcome of the latest investigation with interest. While driver behaviour plays an important part, it is clear that the north-east has suffered from a historic lack of investment from central government in the road network.”
Earlier this year, Anna-Marie Strachan was convicted of causing the death of Fraserburgh man James Thomson by driving dangerously at Rathen on the A90 in 2014.
In February, 2015, a north-east teen was involved in a dramatic one-car incident in which has vehicle overturned and landed in the garden of nearby kennels at Cortes. He was not seriously injured.
