An enchanting performance from London’s Royal Opera House is to be live streamed into Duthie Park as part of this summer’s BP Big Screen programme.
Spectators are being urged to bring along their chairs and picnic baskets to enjoy the drama, emotion and melody of Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata.
The much-loved production of one of the world’s most popular operas is to be screened on Tuesday July 4 and will be sung in Italian with English subtitles.
Councillor Marie Boulton, Aberdeen City Council culture spokesperson said: “I am delighted BP Big Screens are returning to Aberdeen. It’s great to have this opportunity to enjoy opera for free right on our doorstep.
“There is always a wonderful atmosphere in the park, and whether you are a big fan of opera or if this is your first experience of it, I would highly recommend everyone bring their picnic blankets and folding chairs to Duthie Park.”
Live relays of the opera have been streamed into Aberdeen from Covent Garden for more than a decade and, last year, thousands came to Duthie Park to enjoy a rousing performance of Puccini’s La Boheme.
The screen will go live at 6.30pm before the performance begins at 7pm. It will run until around 10.30pm with two intervals of 30 minutes each, packed with exclusive backstage footage, interviews and the chance to win DVDs.
A selection of hot and cold drinks and light snacks will be available to purchase, but no glassware, cans, barbecues or naked flames are allowed at the event.
The alcohol by-law on drinking in public places will be lifted between 6pm and 11pm so that alcohol can be consumed on the main grass area of Duthie Park.
