A traditional market which was cancelled after operating for almost 20 years in Aberdeen city centre will return this month.
The Belmont Street Farmer’s Market had taken place on the last Saturday of the month for the last 17 years, but was axed by organisers Apardion Aberdeen, a security and facilities management company, in May.
However, the event has now been taken over by the team behind the monthly Thistle Street Market, and it will return once again to Belmont Street on July 29.
The owner of Apardion Aberdeen John Mcfarlane said the decision to cancel the market was made in order to focus on other aspects of the business.
He said: “My wife and I are clapped out so we decided we better step back.
“We run a facilities management business which is quite extensive so we decided to concentrate on the business and hand it over to someone else.
“We wish them all success and good luck. We really enjoyed doing the market.”
Under its new owners, the Belmont Street Marked will be held on the last Saturday of every month until December, and then every Saturday prior to Christmas.
Geoff Cooper, city centre manager for the business group Aberdeen Inspired said: “We’re very pleased to have been working to support the return of the Belmont Street Market, which was always very popular with residents and visitors to the city centre for so many years.
“Many of the favourite stalls will be returning and the market will also showcase local products from Aberdeen and the wider north-east.”
Dustin Macdonald, chairman of the city centre community council, also welcomed the news.
He said: “It was always very busy and a good use of the street.
“It brought a buzz to the area during the day – although it is traditionally busy in the evening, it is nice to see it busy in the day time.
“It’s great that it helps local traders and because it brings more people to the area, it also helps out businesses in the surrounding area.”
