Shire council seek’s opinions for future of Peterhead

Rediscover Peterhead aims to improve the town centre.

Peterhead residents are being asked to share their opinions on how they believe new funding could benefit its sport, cultural and community facilities.

Aberdeenshire Council has launched a consultation, seeking to find out the views of local groups and members of the public on how they use existing offerings, and how they would like the town to develop in coming years.

Two surveys are being conducted by the local authority – one to determine whether or not existing facilities are being used to their full extent by community groups, and one to ask residents what their top priorities would be for any future investment in Peterhead.

The chairwoman of the communities committee, Anne Stirling said: “Aberdeenshire Council is keen to understand the community, sports and cultural interest in Peterhead.

“We’d like to hear from those groups with an active interest in existing facilities, as well as the wider public who would like to influence opportunities that may come forward in the future.”

As well as appealing for views of residents and organisations in the town, council officers will also carry out street surveys, and speak to staff and customers at libraries, sport centres and other council sites.

Gillian Owen, the chairwoman of the authority’s education and children’s services committee, said the public’s view will greatly assist the council in improving Peterhead in coming years, if funding is made available.

She said: “This piece of work is about helping us understand what currently takes place in Peterhead and what people’s hopes are for the future, rather than proposals for specific facilities, and all contributions are welcome.

“The information we gather from these surveys will be helpful in any future discussions about developments for the town, and give us a head start if proposals are developed.”

The surveys can be carried out online at the following addresses until Monday, July 28.
