An additional £1million will be spent on two new Aberdeen health centres because of a design fee increase.
Around £120million will be spent on building the Anchor Centre and the Baird Family Hospital at NHS Grampian’s Foresterhill site, and the design phase was originally meant to cost £2.7million.
However, at yesterday’s NHS Grampian board meeting, a revised design fee of up to £3.7million was approved – an increase of £1million.
The increase in fee costs remains within the agreed funding allocated for the project.
The two buildings will replace the existing maternity hospital and Anchor Unit.
Graeme Smith, director of modernisation at the health board, said the additional £1million is required because of design issues that have arisen as part of the project’s development.
At yesterday’s meeting, he told the board: “I have been involved in a good number of projects, and this is probably the most complex design that I have been involved with.”
The Baird Family Hospital will provide maternity, gynecology, breast screening, a neonatal unit and more, and the Anchor Centre will allow NHS Grampian to offer out-patient and day-patient services for patients with blood or bone marrow conditions, cancers and other illnesses.
The two centres are expected to be completed by 2020.
