A nurse is set to pound the streets of Aberdeen in memory of her “inspirational” mother to raise cash for a city hospice.
Katriona Angus, 31, lost her beloved mum Gwen in 2011 to metastatic breast cancer at the age of 50.
Now she hopes to give something back to the specialist facility which cared for Gwen in her final weeks by taking part in the Great Aberdeen Run.
Money she raises from sponsorship for the 10k race will go to the Friends of Roxburghe House, a charity which supports the palliative care unit.
She said: “I’m not great at running but I am giving myself this challenge in her memory and to raise funds for Roxburghe House, the place which made her last couple of weeks the most peaceful and comforting for both her and us as a family.
“My mum was such an inspirational woman. She worked for Cornerstone in Aberdeen, a charity which provides care and support services for adults, children and young people with disabilities and other support needs.
“She managed a couple of Cornerstone’s houses at Portlethen, where she lived, and did so much to help the people there. It was quite a tribute to her when, a couple of years ago, Cornerstone opened a new social housing complex for adults with learning difficulties in the village and asked our permission to name it Angus Court in her memory.”
Thousands of runners will take part in the event, sponsored by Simplyhealth, which starts and finishes on Union Street, passing local landmarks and buildings including Town House, Beach Ballroom, Pittodrie, Marischal College and the Music Hall.
Miss Angus added: “I started training a few weeks ago and I try to go out four times a week. As I start work at 7am most days, I have to run at 5am, so I don’t have much time and I have to run on my own. I can do a little bit more on my days off.
“The longest I’d run until a week ago was 7k but I’ve now managed my first 10k. There’s still a bit of time before the run so I’ll maybe get more done before then.”
