A man has died after crashing off a race track at a popular north-east visitor attraction.
The tragic incident unfolded at the Grampian Transport Museum’s outdoor course in Alford shortly before 11am yesterday.
It is understood the track was hired by a private group when the motorist veered off the route and struck a barrier.
Emergency services, including an air ambulance, police and fire crews went to the scene.
A road ambulance and doctor were also sent but the man, who has yet to be named by police, was pronounced dead at the scene.
It was not clear what had caused the accident, but there had been heavy rain in the area throughout the morning.
The museum was closed, and police also sealed off a side entrance off Stewart Road.
Collision investigators spent much of the day examining the stretch where the crash happened.
The yellow vehicle was covered by tarpaulin and left by the side of the track while they carried out their inquiries. Last night, the community was left reeling by what had happened.
Councillor Moira Ingleby said: “I’m extremely saddened to hear about this incident and my deepest sympathies go out to the man’s family.
“I’m particularly sorry to hear that this has happened at the museum – it’s an extremely popular attraction for locals and visitors alike and I know safety is of paramount importance there.
“I’m really sorry that what would have been a fun day out has ended in tragedy.”
Residents on Stewart Road reported hearing police and fire engines arriving at the scene but had not heard the initial crash.
The track is regularly used at the museum’s open days and events, with visitors given the chance to do laps of the track in supercars, vintage vehicles and even an old police car.
The museum was unable to confirm when it would reopen.
A spokesman said: “Emergency services attended an incident, we are not making any further comment pending an investigation.”
Aberdeenshire Council, which owns the site, last night confirmed its health and safety team will be supporting the police investigation.
Detective Inspector Stewart Drummond said: “Inquiries in conjunction with our partners are ongoing as we try to establish the full circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
“The man’s next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very sad time.”
Police were expected to remain at the scene last night to complete their investigation.
