Two men have been detained by police as inquiries continue into a moped incident that left a schoolboy needing 28 stitches.
The youngster was playing on his BMX in Cornhill Terrace, Aberdeen, when he was involved in a collision with a moped.
He lost four teeth in the incident, which occurred at around 4.30pm on Sunday, and suffered damage to his face and legs. He was later taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for treatment.
His mum stayed at the football-mad Cornhill Primary School pupil’s bedside at the hospital as medical staff spent hours trying to patch up his wounds.
The nature of his head injuries meant doctors had to operate while the eight-year-old was awake, with nothing but numbing drugs and morphine to stop the pain while they stitched him up and reattached his teeth.
The youngster’s mother added: “He’s really sore. He’s lucky not to have any broken bones. The whole gum on the top part of his mouth was sliced in half. He’s got a big laceration on his gum, and another on his nose and the top of his lip.
“They’ve managed to put his teeth back in, but we’ve got to wait five days to see if they will take in the gums. They have a 60/40 chance. If they don’t, then he’ll need even more surgery.
“He’s on pretty strong medication at the moment, but he’s starting to remember things.
“All he’s concerned about is his bike, he keeps asking about it. The police have it, but he won’t be able to ride it again because it’s all bent up.”
A police spokeswoman said: “Police can confirm that two men aged 18 and 19 have been detained as part of inquiries into the collision involving an eight-year-old boy on Sunday, September 3, at Cornhill Terrace, Aberdeen.
“No one has been charged and inquiries are ongoing. Anyone with information in relation to this incident is asked to contact Police on 101 quoting incident 2860 of 3 September 2017.”
