An Aberdeen doctor has set himself a lofty charity challenge for Friends of ANCHOR’s 20-year milestone.
Dr Mohammad Khan is swapping his white coat for lycra and is aiming to climb Banchory’s Scolty hill 20 times in a single day to raise vital funds for the north-east charity.
The consultant haematologist decided to tackle the 16-mile course after seeing at first-hand the support the cancer charity provides to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
Having trained as a junior doctor in the haematology department in the ANCHOR Unit, he knows the vital role the organisation plays at ARI.
He said: “I was inspired to take on a challenge that would push my limits to make my mark for Friends of ANCHOR, having witnessed, on a daily basis, the positive and sheer impact of the charity’s dedicated support to the Unit.
“As you walk down the corridor in the ward, it is the little touches that Friends of ANCHOR provide for patients that can make such a huge difference in their journey.
“It is a milestone celebrating all that Friends of ANCHOR has achieved over the past 20 years, so it was great timing for me to take on my very first personal fundraising challenge.”
Dr Khan will loop the peak of Scolty Hill 20 times – one for every year of the charity’s service – and will clock up 8,500ft during the mammoth challenge on Saturday, September 16.
He hopes to complete the endeavour in less than 8 hours.
Ursula Fairlie, fundraising executive of Friends of ANCHOR, added: “We are so grateful to Dr Khan for coming on board to fundraise for the charity by taking on such a gruelling challenge in aid of Friends of ANCHOR. Every penny that he raises is going directly towards our £1million Dream Big campaign – a fundraising drive we launched earlier this year to recruit a world-class cancer research team to the North-East.
“Without the support of fundraisers like Dr Khan, we simply would not be able to make this level of significant impact on the care, treatment and wellbeing provided to cancer and haematology patients in the North-East of Scotland.”
