An Aberdeenshire town, which has been without a community council after the resignation of its previous group, has now received enough candidates to hold an election.
Ellon Community Council’s eight members resigned en masse last October, claiming they had been told by the local authority they had “insufficient numbers” to continue operating.
However, following a request from the “requisite number” of 12 community members early this year, the Formartine Area Office started the formal process of reinstating a group.
Following yesterday’s closing date, nominations were received and 20 candidates have now been listed, which means an election must take place to fill the 12 places on the council.
The election is being held on Tuesday, September 19 in the Buchan Hotel, Ellon between 6pm and 8pm. And residents in the Ellon catchment area have been invited to go along and vote.
Eligible candidates either must appear on the electoral roll for the area or have their principal residence within the boundary.
Business owners in Ellon could also have put their names forward.
The intention is for the count to take place the same evening with successful candidates being announced as soon as possible.
Returning officer and Formartine Area Manager Elaine Brown said: “Community councils represent the views of local communities and act on their behalf. They are a crucial element in the democratic process.
“It is therefore great to see so many people in Ellon want to help and represent their community. I would urge those who live in Ellon to come out and vote on September 19 for whom they want to see on Ellon Community Council.”
