There was a turnip for the books as hundreds of visitors enjoyed an annual vegetable show and competition at Duthie Park yesterday.
From onions big enough to make your eyes water to leeks which were five feet long, the Grampian District Association (GDA) of the National Vegetable Society had more than 70 different enormous and interesting exhibits for this year’s show in the park’s Winter Gardens.
Competitors from all across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire put forward their produce in the competition, but it was Dunecht gardener George Cumming who stole the show with the most awards.
GDA secretary Frank Taylor, who won the most points in the onion classes, said the public display at Duthie Park was the highlight of the group’s year.
He said: “We started with public shows in Duthie Park five years ago.
“We previously had our yearly competitions in private, but we decided that what we’re growing is worth seeing, and we’ve been inviting the public to come along and see the vegetables ever since.
“It was an absolutely fantastic day, we had hundreds of people come along, including a number of tourists from outwith Aberdeen who popped into the Winter Gardens to have a look.
“From humble tomatoes and potatoes all the way to four and a half foot parnsips and cauliflowers a foot across, we really had a lot of amazing vegetables for people to see this year.
“There are less than a dozen of us in the GDA, so it was a lot of hard work to get everything together for this show, but it was all worth it.
“We’re already looking forward to planning next year’s event.”
