A group of north-east women have raffled a unique piece of jewellery to raise thousands of pounds for vital cancer treatment.
Local businesswomen and friends in Fraserburgh made £7,000 for the breast care unit at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with the help of hundreds of locals who offered up cash for a chance to walk away with a stunning diamond necklace.
Debbie Cooper, who owns a hairdresser in the port, said the group came together because many had friends or family members who have been affected by cancer.
Originally it had been planned to host just a small fundraiser between the women but escalated after word got out.
And last night she said the raffle was so successful that a second one is already being considered.
Mrs Cooper said: “We had about 128 people turn out for the raffle, and we had an afternoon of light entertainment.
“We’ll be handing over the money officially at some point in the near future – we’re just waiting to organise that.
“We can’t name the winner of the raffle, though, because they want to eventually give it to someone as a surprise gift.
“It was definitely a unique idea and I think we’ll definitely be doing another raffle next year.”
The 18-carat white gold necklace was created by Unique Jewels in the town alongside 20 other items of jewellery to boost the group’s coffers.
Shop owner Jay Sprigg created the piece called it “Broch Against Breast Cancer”.
He said: “I came up with a few ideas, and together we decided on a heart pendent set with diamonds, so all you could see was the stones.”
