A terminally-ill Aberdeenshire mum, who has just months to live, has promised to create a lifetime’s worth of memories with her husband and young children.
Jennifer Dunbar, who lives in Insch, was told the devastating news last weekend, just a month after being given the all-clear, following a battle with breast cancer since the start of the year.
The 33-year-old, who is married to Mark, was getting ready to take her three-year-old daughter, Katie, and nine-year-old step-son, Rhys, horse riding when she collapsed.
She woke up in hospital two days later and was told she had suffered from three seizures, and had an incurable form of brain cancer which would leave her with between three and four months to live.
She said: “I was numb with shock, I thought I had beaten it.
“It’s just awful to think I’ve got a daughter, a step-son and a husband, and all I want to do is make more memories with them and with my other family.
“Just now I feel fine, which makes it harder, I have medication to take for the seizures and painkillers to take as well, I’ll just have to play every day by ear.
“Rhys does know, but Katie being three wouldn’t understand, she obviously knows that mum hasn’t been well but she doesn’t really understand everything that’s going on.”
Following the diagnosis, Mrs Dunbar’s friends set up a crowdfunding campaign to help the family over the next few months.
So far, the page has raised almost £3,500, with a target of £5,000.
Mrs Dunbar, who worked as a marketing and events manager for Decom North Sea in Westhill prior to her illness, said she had been thrilled by the response.
She added: “I’m just overwhelmed because, obviously, my thoughts are with my family, and I want to make sure they’re okay, that’s the most important thing for me.
“These people are easing that a little bit.
“I’ll definitely be setting up a bucket list – one of the things I want to do is take my daughter horse riding.
“My husband and I got married in the Marcliffe two years ago, so I want to have a night there as well.”
