Hero pupils at an Aberdeen primary school have been praised after saving the life of their classmate.
Ten-year-old Tyler Hood was playing on his scooter outside Tesco in Woodend last Thursday when he fell and was knocked unconscious.
With blood coming from his nose and mouth, his friend Jac Banks, 11, remembered last year’s first aid lessons and rushed into action.
He placed his young pal in the recovery position, opening his airway as he lay unconscious.
When paramedics arrived at the scene, they told the injured boy’s mother that Jac’s actions had saved Tyler’s life.
While the rescue took place, schoolmate Bradley Chalmers, 11, looked after Tyler’s baby sister at the scene while the younger boy’s mother rushed over to see her son.
Yesterday their school, Fernielea Primary, paid a special tribute to the boys.
Head teacher Lisa Walker praised them for their quick thinking which saved the life of their friend and fellow pupil.
Jac and Bradley each received a Head Teacher’s Award at the school assembly for their actions.
Tyler, who is still recovering and not attending school at present, also received recognition for his bravery during his ordeal.
Ms Walker said that the entire school community was “very proud”.
She said: “He was unconscious and bleeding from the nose and mouth so it must have been a very scary situation for them.
“Luckily they remembered the first aid they had learned and put him in the recovery position.
“I think the fact that they was so cool and calm for someone of their age in that situation, we are so proud of them for keeping their heads in what could have been a very serious situation.”
Hazlehead, Queen’s Cross and Countesswells councillor Claire Imrie said she would write to the school to congratulate the boys.
She said: “It is brilliant that these young boys responded so responsibly and saved their friend’s life.
“It is reassuring to know that children are being taught these vital lifesaving skills at such a young age and I think it is a lesson to many adults just how important they are.”
