Parking at a busy north-east railway station is to be improved.
Construction teams will create 36 more spaces at Inverurie Railway Station as part of an extension which forms an early part of the town’s new transport interchange.
Work is due to begin in the next week with the project due to be completed in the festive season.
Vacant land to the north west corner of the existing car park will be used to create the new spaces and there will also be resurfacing to a section of the current site.
The project is a partnership between Aberdeenshire Council, Scotrail, Nestrans and Luddon Construction.
The work will comprise excavation, drainage, installing a vehicle restraint system, lighting, CCTV and surfacing and white lining.
It will be carried out in two phases to minimise disruption, with a partial closure to some of the existing car park planned during the latter stage.
When complete, there will be 140 spaces available.
Councillor Peter Argyle, who is chairman of Nestrans as well as the infrastructure services committee, said: “The level of rail passenger growth on the Inverurie line over recent years has been remarkable and we want to do all we can to keep encouraging people to use public transport.
“That means supporting users by offering accessible, secure and welcoming facilities and enabling the smooth transfer between different services and modes.
“The work we see starting on the car park is part of a phased development of the new Inverurie Transport Interchange and, in conjunction with the future provision of the new railway station at Kintore, creates a hugely positive impact for transport along the corridor and work on integrating our towns.”
