A man was in police custody last night after a woman was found dead in an Aberdeen flat.
Police launched a murder inquiry after the 20-year-old was found in a property on Rosemount Viaduct early yesterday morning.
It is understood officers raced to the scene after being alerted to “concerns” for the woman at about 7.30am.
Paramedics also attended, but the woman, who has not yet been named, could not be saved.
Last night, police confirmed a 32-year-old man had been detained in connection with the woman’s death.
Detective Chief Inspector Iain Smith, who is leading the investigation, assured residents in the Rosemount area that it was a “contained and isolated” incident.
He said: “I can confirm that the death is being treated as suspicious, and a 32-year-old man is currently detained and assisting the major investigation team with its inquiries.
“Our thoughts at this tragic time are with the family and friends of the young woman involved.”
“We will continue to carry out inquiries over the next few days in the area and the local community is thanked for their patience meantime.”
A police cordon remained at the flat throughout the day, with forensic experts drafted in to examine the scene and piece together what happened.
Meanwhile, plain clothed officers carried out door-to-door inquiries and asked businesses for CCTV footage.
The tragedy unfolded just across the road from where takeaway boss Kazi Ahmad, 41, was stabbed to death nearly 40 years ago.
His killer, employee Riasat Khan, was finally brought to justice this week after a five-day trial at the High Court in Edinburgh.
Last night, Rosemount councillor Bill Cormie said he was shocked at the latest incident and said it was “very sad”.
“It is never good to hear of any death in a community, but particularly to hear of one so young is very sad.
“It must be heartbreaking for her family and my thoughts and sympathy go out to them.”
Shop worker Catriona Cassidy watched the drama unfold throughout the day, and said: “It is utterly shocking and to have happened in a relatively nice area of Aberdeen.
“I’m glad to hear they have apprehended someone. It is so, so sad. I feel terrible for her family and to think that a mother and father are receiving such tragic news.”
Ronan Wallace, manager of the Masada Bar, said the timing of the grim discovery was all the more tragic given the recent conviction of Khan.
He said: “We have just had folk in this week asking about the murder across the road 40 years ago and now this. This part of town is usually really quiet, but it has been the talk of everyone in here today.”
