Council education chiefs are recommending that an Aberdeen Catholic school is moved from its long-term home to a new site.
St Peter’s primary has been at its current Dunbar Street location since 1983 after originally being founded by Father Charles Gordon in 1833.
But the popular primary establishment has long been plagued by overcrowding, which led to the authority giving consideration last year to converting the janitor’s lodge into classrooms.
The adjacent council building, Old Aberdeen House, has also had rooms converted for teaching.
However, a new report to the authority’s education committee now recommends that the school relocates again and moves to the current Riverside Primary in Tillydrone.
The report reveals that a number of sites were assessed for suitability, including the current AECC site in Bridge of Don.
It rules out the current Dunbar Street site, stating: Whilst the current ongoing short-term action plan will help resolve the current capacity issues at St Peter’s, it will not alleviate capacity issues which are forecast for future years.“
Stephanie Brock, the treasurer of the St Peter’s parent council, said she welcomed the consultation, but looked forward to further clarity from the council.
She added: “Despite the ongoing overcrowding and building condition issues, the educational and social environment provided are top quality.
“The school community continues to do well and the children are flourishing.
“We just look forward to a time when the school will be able to do what it does best without the constraints it currently has on it.”
