Officers are appealing for information after a doorbell was set alight at a Turriff home.
Officers were called to the property in Chapel Street at around 10pm on Monday after the fire was discovered.
Investigating officer constable Liam Cousins said: “The resident was alerted to the fire by a neighbour and it was quickly extinguished by the householder. Thankfully no one was injured, however this was obviously an incredibly serious incident which could have had potentially life threatening consequences to the family within the house.
“I am looking to speak with anyone who either saw or heard anything suspicious on Monday night or who has heard anything about it since it happened.
“It is believed that a large group of youths were seen in the area at the time of the incident and I would be keen to speak with them, as they may have information that could be useful to the inquiry.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting reference 3634 of 13 November. Alternatively information can be given to the independent charity, Crimestoppers by phoning 0800 555 111.
