The Met Office has extended a snow and ice warning across the north and north-east until Friday morning at 10am.
The initial yellow warning was issued yesterday, advising residents that the frosty conditions would last until 11am today.
But the cautionary message has now been renewed, with snow and ice expected to cause problems until at least 10am tomorrow.
A statment on the Met Office’s website says: “Occasional heavy wintry showers are expected, mainly during Thursday afternoon and evening.
“Two to five centimeters of snow may accumulate on ground above 100m, primarily over Scotland and northeast England.
“Journey times may be longer by road, bus and rail.
“Icy stretches are also expected to form on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths or where showers cause wash off on treated roads, particularly during Thursday evening and Friday morning.”
Motorists were advised to exert caution this morning, as snow caused a spate of accidents.
Bus services were also affected, including the Stagecoach number 10 route after a bus got stuck at Inveramsay Bridge.
The bad weather also resulted in many schools across the north-east being closed and motorists faced hour-long tailbacks in all directions.
