Woman expected to appear at Aberdeen court after death of ‘lovely guy’ Alan

Murder inquiry launched following suspicious death of man

A pensioner found dead in Aberdeen was last night described as “a lovely guy” by heartbroken neighbours, as police charged a woman in connection with his death.

Alan Cowie’s body was found by emergency services at his home on Tillydrone’s Alexander Terrace on Wednesday, at about 10am.

At 10pm yesterday, police confirmed that a 52-year-old woman had been charged in connection with the 65-year-old’s death.

Detective Inspector Gary Winter, who is leading the investigation, said: “I would like to thank the members of the public who have assisted so far.

“A visible police presence will remain in the area while our inquiries continue, and I would ask for continued patience.

“Our thoughts are with Mr Cowie’s family and friends at this difficult time.”

Officers stood guard inside the stairwell of the block yesterday with squad cars arriving and departing on the narrow street through the day.

At one point, two large black communal bins were wrapped in police tape, although it wasn’t known whether this was connected to the investigation.

Mr Cowie, who had connections to the Buckie area, was well known in Tillydrone – with one neighbour saying he “would do anything for you”.

The woman, who did not want to be named, added: “I knew him quite well in passing, I last spoke to him three days ago when we talked about our Christmases. It was a real shock to wake up and see the news, he was the type who would go out of their way for you.”

John McPherson, 32, said: “I’m really surprised.”

Tillydrone and Old Aberdeen councillor Alexander McLellan said: “My thoughts are with the friends and family of Mr Cowie at what must be a very hard time.

“If anyone has any information, I would urge them to contact police.”

Police specifically wish to hear from people who saw Mr Cowie over the New Year period, as well as those with general information they feel is relevant.

People should call the police on 101, or the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555111 if they would prefer to remain anonymous.
