The city council’s audit committee have passed a motion to say that former councillor Willie Young did not benefit from the “wallgate” fiasco and that there was no misuse of public funds.
The committee was being updated on actions taken in wake of incident last year where almost £200,000 of public money was spent on repairs to a wall and cycle path near the home of the local authority’s then-finance chief, without the decision ever being scrutinised by a committee.
It was alleged that Willie Young was the owner of the land at Wellington Brae, but it later transpired that he had disposed of it more than two decades previously to his father and was cleared of any wrongdoing.
A major probe was launched into the council’s management of projects and how Mr Young had been identified as the landowner.
Last night the former Labour Bridge of Don councillor said: “The decision by the audit, scrutiny and risk committee today to unanimously agree that there was no misuse of public funds by former councillor Willie Young vindicates my position.
“This matter is now behind me and although I believe the false allegations made against me cost me my council seat this decision today allows my good name to remain intact.”
