A disabilities champion has called for people across the north-east to keep an eye out for neighbours after being trapped at home for two days.
Dame Anne Begg, the first wheelchair-using MP in the commons, has been unable to leave her house in the Cove area of Aberdeen as the ramp outside has been snowed under.
The former Labour MP is now chairwoman of the city-based Disability Equity Partnership, who campaign to raise awareness of the challenges faced by disabled people.
She said: “I have been stuck inside since Tuesday. Luckily I had planned ahead and saw the weather coming so had stocked up on supplies but a lot of other people haven’t been so lucky.
“The problem is that the snow is covering the ramp every morning so even if someone clears it I may not be able to get back inside.
“When I can get out in snowy weather I carry a small bag of rock salt with me.”
Dame Anne said she had ended up in a wheelchair after a snowy night in 1984 when she fell and broke her legs.
And she revealed she had moved to Cove because it was less snowy than other areas of the city.
She said: “This isn’t just me, anyone in a wheelchair or with limited mobility can have real trouble in these conditions.
“Keep an eye out for your neighbours because their friends or relatives may not be able to come to them.
“People who say ‘it’s just a bit of snow’ are the ones who can walk in it and don’t have to think about it.”
