A memorial is to be erected to commemorate the victims of a WWII bombing raid at a historic north-east property.
A German Heinkel III plane dropped four bombs on Duff House killing eight people just after 9am on Monday, July 22, 1940.
The building was being used as a prisoner of war camp at the time and two guards and six German men were among the dead.
They were Thomas Blakey of the Royal Armoured Corps and George James of the Royal Army Medical Corps.
The prisoners who died were Hermann Ackermann, Rudolf Bopp, Heinz Heymann, Conrad Marschall, Gunter Nordhausen and Kurt Redieck. They all served with the Kriegsmarine.
An RAF aircraft was scrambled from Dyce and the German bomber was shot down over the North Sea.
Now the Friends of Duff House have teamed up with Historic Environment Scotland to create a lasting memorial to the men who lost their lives when the Luftwaffe came to Banff.
A dedication service is to be held on July, 22, exactly 78 years since the raid.
Ian Williams, the chairman of the Friends of Duff House, said: “This project will never end, but we are now sure that the full names of all those that died are known, and Friends of Duff House together with Historic Environment Scotland feel it appropriate that a memorial should be erected on the site to remember those who died as a result of the bombing.
“Holding a memorial dedication service will pay tribute to a few more of those who died to create the world we know today.”
The manor house is managed by Historic Environment Scotland and the organisation confirmed talks have been held with the group on establishing a memorial.
A spokeswoman said: “Discussions are at an early stage. We are currently finalising the details of the event later in the summer.”
Duff House itself came away from the attack relatively unscathed after the two shells dropped on it failed to explode, although shrapnel damage can still be seen on the walls outside.
Another two bombs exploded and destroyed part of an extension which had to be demolished.
The Friends of Duff House hope to invite anyone who was in Banff or Macduff on that day to the dedication service in July.
Anyone who can help is asked to contact the group on friendsofduffhouse@gmail.com
