North-east sporting stars have given their backed plans for proposed multi-million pound health village on the outskirts of Aberdeen.
Granite City boxer Lee McAllister this week unveiled his vision for potentially developing a 26-acre area of land into a new sporting site featuring a swimming pool, football pitches and homeless accommodation.
It is envisaged that the site would contain disabled-friendly facilities and also be targeted at vulnerable people like addicts, homeless people, cancer patients, veterans and disadvantaged children.
He says the plan would mean around £10million was invested over five years.
Mr McAllister said he was preparing a formal planning application to the city council, and had sought advice from a range of local sports heroes about how to develop the project.
Last night, Paralympics gold medal-winning cyclist Neil Fachie MBE, from Aberdeen, said: “Lee spoke to me a few months ago about the idea.
“It is still at an early stage, and has a lot of phases to go through, but I think it sounds like a fantastic idea.
“The addition of any sporting facilities in the north-east, particularly those with great facilities for disabled people, has to be welcomed.
“These things can take a long time to go through but I will be keeping a close eye on it.”
Former city council leader, and professional wrestler, Len Ironside CBE said: “It is a very admirable idea which encompasses everything from activity and care to disability sports. I would wish Lee every success with this multi million pound project.”
