A dedicated man has cycled the distance between a North-east town and London as part of his venture to raise funds for a charity close to his heart.
Steven Henderson is running the London Marathon next month for the Scottish Huntington’s Association.
As part of his efforts to raise money, Steven took to a stationary bike at Tesco in Westhill to cycle the 543-mile distance – raising around £2,500 in the process.
Huntington’s is a disease that runs in his family, and the 34-year-old has watched his grandfather die from the illness – as well as seen other close members of his family get diagnosed with the condition.
Steven, who lives in Westhill and is a service co-ordinator at an oil services firm, said: “Last year I did the London Marathon for Scottish Huntington’s Association.
“I was lucky enough this year to get a space for the marathon and I’ll be running for the charity again.
“As part of the fundraising, I thought I would do something a bit different.
“I decided to cycle the distance from Tesco Westhill to the Greenwich Observatory in London, which is near where the marathon begins.”
He added: “Huntington’s goes through my family.
“I watched it affect my grandad and so many other members of my family have it, including my mum and sister.
“It’s a horrific disease. It takes away your ability to speak or even move eventually.
“It spurs you on to want to help charities find a cure or treatment for it.”
Steven, who is married to Angie and has a son, Zach, 7, and a daughter, Abbie, 3, also spoke of the inspiration his family and community give him to continue fundraising for the Scottish Huntington’s Association.
He said: “So many local people have come down to see me during this challenge.
“The support has been incredible.
“My family have also been there constantly which has been the best motivation I could ask for.”
