Councillors will make an official site visit to Union Terrace Gardens before officially deciding on the £22million revamp.
The planning committee met yesterday to debate whether to grant the massive scheme for the sunken Victorian gardens.
Council planners had recommended members approve the scheme with various conditions attached.
But Rosemount and Midstocket councillor Bill Cormie said that because it was such a “major decision” he would like for members to visit the park once more before making a final choice.
He said: “I think we really need a site visit here.
“I pass the gardens everyday but we need to see the proposed changes close up.”
His call was backed by Hazlehead, Queens Cross and Countesswells councillor Martin Greig, who said: “It is crucial that we learn lessons from the past.
“The current proposals need to be given as much consideration as possible.”
Among the designs are proposals for three walkways, a new entrance plaza, lift access from Union Terrace, a “halo” lighting feature and a public amphitheatre.
The Victorian toilets would be transformed into a cafe or restaurant space.
Hazlehead, Queens Cross and Countesswells councillor Jennifer Stewart said she didn’t see the need in a site visit to the famous city centre gardens, but Mr Cormie’s suggestion was backed by other members.
There was initial confusion as to when the visit would be held, with members told to go to the gardens immediately.
Soon after, they were informed that further contact would need to be made with a variety of groups before they could proceed.
It will now take place on Wednesday.
