A celebrated Aberdeen street art festival will feature more political murals as it returns to the Granite City for a second year.
Organisers Aberdeen Inspired have promised this year’s Nuart festival will be a “revolution of the ordinary” as they unveiled their programme and locations for this year’s festivities running from April 12-15.
Last year’s programme attracted headlines and visitors across the globe with the art works popping up on the side of many Granite City buildings.
This year will see the renowned Peacock Visual Arts (PVA) collaborate with Nuart for an exhibition that launches on April 12 and runs until May 5.
Inky Protest will feature a selection of work plucked from the archives of Nuart Gallery and Peacock Visual Arts, including prints from Hunter S. Thompson confidante Ralph Steadman to New York legends Futura and Martha Cooper.
The Belmont Filmhouse will host a number of events throughout the festival, including an Amnesty International panel debate on the morning of April 13 focusing on Women Human Rights Defenders.
It will take inspiration from Carrie Reichardt’s soon to be produced mural on Adelphi Lane, which will honour numerous Scottish women recognized by Amnesty for their role in campaigning for various human rights causes.
On both Saturday and Sunday, 90-minute walking tours of the latest street art will be provided at 1pm and 2pm.
Adrian Watson, chief executive of Aberdeen Inspired, said: “I know many people are excited for the return of the festival and it won’t be long now until the artists are here in Aberdeen working on more fantastic street art for everyone to admire and enjoy around the city centre. We can’t wait to see what they’ve got in store for us this year.”
David McCracken, print curator at PVA, said: “We are delighted to be participating in what we’re sure will be another very successful Nuart project.”
Russell Borthwick, chief executive of Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce, said: “Nurturing and growing successful initiatives like Nuart is just the start of developing a world class events strategy that will deliver economic benefits to our region for years to come.”
