New flights from Aberdeen to Antwerp have been announced.

VLM Airlines will offer new routes between the Belgian city and the north-east three times a week from April 14.

Carol Benzie, the managing director of Aberdeen Airport, said the new destination will prove popular for both tourists and people travelling for work.

Direct flights will operate on Mondays, leaving Aberdeen at 1.10pm and arriving in Antwerp at 4.10pm, and on Wednesday and Fridays flights will depart from Aberdeen at 1.10pm, make a half-hour stopover in Birmingham, and land in Antwerp at 5.35pm.

VLM Airlines has offered a £39 promotional introductory fare for one leg of a return journey, if booked before April 14.

Ms Benzie said: “The addition of a Belgian destination to our route network is very exciting.

“Antwerp is a fantastic destination for both business and leisure travellers, and hopefully, the introductory fares on offer will encourage passengers to try out this new service.”

Konstantijn Huys, commercial director of the airline, said: “With a new route between Antwerp and Aberdeen, we are targeting customers from the oil and natural gas sector for an obvious reason.

“From Aberdeen, one of the busiest heliports in Europe, numerous flights are being carried out to offshore drilling platforms in the North Sea.

“And Antwerp is, after Houston in Texas, the second largest petrochemical cluster in the world.

“In addition, Antwerp is also one of the largest seaports in Europe and the diamond capital of the world.

“A short ride takes you to Brussels and the Flemish art cities Bruges and Ghent, as well as to Eindhoven and Rotterdamn in the Netherlands.”
