Animal lovers have been urged to contribute to a UK Government consultation that could see the use of controversial electric shock dog collars outlawed.
Aberdeen South MP Ross Thomson has been campaigning for a “comprehensive ban” on the use and sale of the collars, which claim to be a training aid, and has convinced UK Ministers to consult on the issue.
Now Mr Thomson, himself a dog owner, has urged those who agree the use of the collars is “cruel, barbaric and outdated” to let the government know how they feel.
He added: “Since I launched this campaign, many people I have spoken to, including those at the highest level of government, have been astonished these devices are so prevalent.
“At a time when there have been significant advances in positive, reward-based training, there really should be no place for these cruel and unnecessary collars.
“The consultation document is looking for views and calling for evidence on the sale of electric shock dog collars as well as their use.
“Having a consistent legislative approach across the UK ensures the best protection for dogs and makes it easier for the police to properly enforce any ban.”
