Parking restrictions outside a Buchan school could be extended in an effort to make the area safer for pupils.
There have been long-standing concerns over inconsiderate parking and poor visibility for pupils entering and leaving St Fergus Primary near Peterhead.
Now the existing ‘School Keep Clear’ markings outside the school will be expanded on both sides of the village’s School Road.
New parking and waiting restrictions will also be introduced along nearby Langley Road, with double yellow lines to be painted at its junction with School Road.
The council has decided to act after “various safety concerns” were raised over parking around the 117 pupil school and in a bid to improve visibility for children.
A spokeswoman for the St Fergus School Association parents group said she was aware of the proposed measures.
She said: “My understanding is that the parking restrictions are being put in place to ensure the safety of all who attend the school.”
A report by Aberdeenshire Council’s infrastructure boss Stephen Archer said it was aimed at stopping vehicles from parking at crossing areas.
He said: “Following various safety concerns about the parking around St Fergus Primary School on School Road and Langley Road, it is proposed to extend the existing ‘School Keep Clear’ markings on both sides of School Road and to introduce parking and waiting restrictions on both sides of Langley Road.
“This is to prevent vehicles parking at road crossing points and to improve the visibility for children when entering and exiting school.”
The council intends to undertake a four-week statutory consultation with interested parties including the AA, Road Haulage Association and others.
A 21-day public consultation would follow.
“Site notices will be erected at the affected location, giving anyone who wishes to object to the making of the order the opportunity to do so,” Mr Archer said.
Fresh parking restrictions are also being proposed for the village’s Netherhill Road and Kirktown junction after it emerged vehicles left there are making it difficult for buses to turn.
Councillors on the Buchan area committee will be asked to approve the new restrictions at a meeting in Peterhead on Tuesday.
