An Aberdeen MSP has called for local residents to have their say in proposals for a night-time pedestrianisation of several city centre streets.
Earlier this week, it emerged the city council was considering closing off Justice Mill Lane, Langstane Place and Windmill Brae to traffic between 10pm and 5am.
The proposal, which will be discussed by city councillors next week, has the backing of many local bars, who say it will mean revellers will not have to dodge traffic.
But the Bon Accord Terrace and Area Residents’ Association fear an increase in antisocial behaviour, and have said in a statement that they are “incredulous” that the scheme is being considered.
And last night, Aberdeen Central SNP MSP Kevin Stewart said that it was “important to strike the right balance” when consulting on the proposals.
He said: “It is positive that the council is looking to improve the night-time economy, make it more appealing and support the trade in our city but it is important to respect the wishes of the local residents and I hope that their views are taken into account when any decisions are made.
“I think it is important to strike the right balance. The council needs to make sure that the night-time economy can thrive but not at the expense of the local folks’ amenity.”
Council co-leader Douglas Lumsden said: “We try and take on as many views as possible before making decisions and we will do so in this case.
“It is good that Kevin Stewart is taking an interest in the plans for the city.”
