A Peterhead woman has hailed “amazing” response to her appeal for knitters to join her bid to create a unique World War I commemoration.
Around 10,000 poppies are needed for a large-scale installation that will mark the centenary of the end of the conflict.
Already around 300 volunteers have come forward from across the north and north east and there are hopes even more will take part.
Organisers are even trying to convince Peterhead FC’s promotion chasing players to play a part in the effort.
The knitted flowers will cascade down a fishing net outside the town’s Baptist Church in November in a similar fashion to the Weeping Willow display at the Tower of London, which attracted thousands of visitors.
It is hoped the Peterhead display, which marks the exact moment the fighting stopped 100 years ago, will make a similar impact north of the border.
Nancy Duncan began her search for a small army of knitters last month and the oil worker from Peterhead said responses have been flying in from far and wide.
She said: “It is hard to pin down an exact number because some of those involved are groups of people but I think we are at about 300 and that is absolutely fantastic.
“We have people getting in touch from Inverness, Peterhead, Banchory, Stonehaven and Westhill.
“The response is amazing. I really am blessed.”
Despite the success of her appeal, Miss Duncan is not resting on her laurels as she bids to bring her commemoration plans to life.
First up, she has high hopes she can convince more men to become involved in making the woolen floral tribute.
Miss Duncan said: “I am moving on to the next stage where we are looking for men to help with the wiring into the net.
“I have made contact with Peterhead Men’s Shed and I am going to Peterhead Football Club to ask if the players will get involved.
“We will try to get the players doing a wee bit, even if it is just for half a morning or so.”
