Council chiefs may have to argue for “exceptional circumstances” to extend a time limit on more than £1.6 million of unspent Scottish Government funding.
A report presented to the council’s city growth committee yesterday revealed the local authority has spent only £1.1million of the £2.7million received from the pupil equity fund last year.
The fund was created by Holyrood to raise attainment in classrooms across the country and reduce inequalities in education between the richest and poorest students.
Council chiefs now have until August to spend the cash – with some schools like Torry Academy having more than £100,000 unspent.
But the committee heard yesterday that Holyrood had indicated the deadline could be extended past August in “exceptional circumstances.”
Trouble attracting staff has been blamed for the spending shortfall.
