Lifeboats were launched at around 6.35pm after a distress signal was picked up by a crew member. A coastguard spokesman said: “We have got the lifeboat and coastguard teams out. “We heard the spoken word ‘mayday’.” While the incident was still open at 10pm, the spokesman added that they were of the opinion that it had been a hoax call.
