A mother and daughter have shed the pounds and handed them to a cancer charity.

Sheena Motion decided to raise cash for Brain Tumour Action after her son, Steven, was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour last year.

She and her daughter Fiona Morrison are aiming to shed 70lbs – five stone – between them before the end of June, and have already smashed their fundraising target.

And their fundraising mission has become a family affair, with Mrs Morrison’s husband Richard also getting involved – nominating Brain Tumour Action to benefit from his work’s Christmas raffle.

Transocean has now donated £1,000 to the charity, which provides practical and emotional support to brain tumour sufferers and their families through its counselling phoneline and funding for research.

It means the family has now secured more than £1,500 for BTA.

Mrs Motion, who lives in Westhill, said: “My daughter and I decided at Christmas we would try and do something for the charity because of the way Steven has coped with his treatment.

“We wanted to give something back to BTA.

“Our target was to lose 70lbs and take in £300, so far we have raised £510.

“Steven has just been taking it one day at a time and getting on with things. I just felt that more needs to be done in terms of research.

“It’s not going to help him because there’s not much more they can do for him, but it will hopefully help others in the future.”

The 66-year-old said the fundraising target had the additional benefit of giving the pair a goal in their weight loss.

She added: “We both had a lot of weight to lose and we joined Weight Watchers.

“Now we’re both going to carry on.”

Mrs Motion thanked her son-in-law’s company for also donating to a cause so close to the family’s heart.

“I’m really grateful to everyone that’s donated, it’s really nice to give thanks back,” she said.

“There’s lots of people who you give money to and you don’t really hear back to find out what happened, it’s nice to know that you are helping.”

Brain Tumour Action is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, making it the oldest brain tumour charity in the UK.

It supports patients across Scotland, and will hold its annual family fun day at Blair Drummond Safari Park on July 28. A family ceilidh is also being held in Edinburgh to mark its 25th anniversary on May 26.
